The Economy
The Economy
Gold is the app's internal currency. It has no value outside the app, and it cannot be bought with real money โ not yet. It exists so that the app has a way to acknowledge effort that is not measured in XP.
XP measures how much you have done. Gold measures what you can do with the room you have made. The two are related but distinct, and understanding the difference is the point of this section.
Two currencies, two purposes
XP is earned. It accumulates. It moves you through levels and ranks. You cannot spend it, and you cannot lose it.
Gold is earned. It accumulates. It is spent. It buys you room.
That is the whole distinction. XP is a measure of progress. Gold is a resource. The app tracks both separately, for different reasons, in different ledgers.
How gold is earned
There are four sources of gold. Each is a different kind of moment.
Signup bonus. Every new account receives 100 gold when it is created. This is a gift, not a reward. It exists so that the shop is a real thing from the first day, not an abstraction you have to save toward for a month.
Daily claim. Every day, once per server day, you can claim 200 gold. The claim is a small button in the Arena hero that appears when it is available. It disappears after you claim it, and reappears the next day. There is no notification, no reminder. It is simply there when you look for it.
Streak milestones. When your activity streak reaches 7, 30, 100, or 365 days, a bonus is granted automatically:
- 7 days โ 500 gold
- 30 days โ 2,000 gold
- 100 days โ 10,000 gold
- 365 days โ 50,000 gold
Each milestone is one-time. Reaching 7 days once earns 500 gold. Reaching 7 days again after a break earns nothing. The bonus is for the first time only.
Achievement unlocks. Every achievement awards gold equal to its XP reward. Unlocking First Step grants 10 XP and 10 gold. Unlocking Century grants 1,000 XP and 1,000 gold. The two currencies move together on achievements, and only on achievements.
What gold is spent on
Gold is spent in the shop, accessed via the Shop tab in the The Arena. There are two categories of items.
Capacity upgrades. These are permanent increases to the limits on your account.
| Resource | Free limit | What gold buys |
|---|---|---|
| Active subjects | 6 | +1 or +3 at a time |
| Rituals per subject | 5 | +2 at a time |
| Goals | 12 | +5 at a time |
| Goal nesting depth | 2 levels | +1 at a time |
When you purchase a capacity upgrade, the limit increases permanently. The increase applies immediately and is never removed. If you archive a subject, it no longer counts against your active subject cap โ only active subjects count.
Conveniences. These are one-shot items.
- Task Pack (10) โ 300 gold. Creates ten blank independent tasks dated today, ready for you to name and schedule.
- Streak Shield โ 400 gold. Protects your streak from breaking for one missed day. When a missed day would reset your streak, the shield is consumed silently and the streak continues.
The ledger
Every gold movement in the app is recorded in an append-only ledger.
The ledger has one row per movement. Each row records:
- The amount โ positive for credits, negative for debits.
- The balance after the movement โ a snapshot of your total at that moment.
- The reason โ one of a fixed set:
signup_bonus,daily_claim,streak_bonus,achievement_reward, orpurchase. - A reference to the thing that caused it โ an achievement, a milestone, a purchase.
The ledger is never updated. If a movement needs to be corrected, a new movement is added. The original is preserved. This is deliberate, and it is what makes the ledger trustworthy: the balance you see is not a running number that could be silently wrong. It is the sum of every recorded movement, and the sum is checked every time it is written.
What happens when you buy
When you click Buy on a shop item:
- The app checks that your balance is sufficient.
- A debit is written to the ledger, with the reason
purchase. - A record is written to a separate purchases table, recording what you bought and at what price.
- The effect is applied โ capacity is incremented, or the task pack is created, or the streak shield is armed.
- All four steps happen inside a single transaction. If any step fails, none of them count.
You can see your recent purchases at the bottom of the Shop tab, and your recent gold movements in the ledger on the Personal tab of the The Arena.
What gold does not do
A few things worth being explicit about.
Gold cannot be bought. There is no way to exchange real money for gold in the current version. The economy is closed.
Gold cannot be transferred. You cannot send gold to another user, and no one can send gold to you.
Gold cannot be lost. No action in the app removes gold from your balance except a purchase. There are no penalties, no fees, no expiry.
Gold cannot be refunded. Once a purchase is made, it is made. If you buy a capacity upgrade you did not need, the gold is spent. This is the app's one concession to strictness, and it exists because the alternative โ a refund system โ creates its own complexity without solving any real problem.
Why this design
The gold economy is deliberately quiet and deliberately closed.
It exists to give you something to accumulate that is not XP. XP is a measure of how much you have done, and it grows as long as you are active. Gold grows more slowly โ 200 a day, plus occasional milestones โ and it asks you to make decisions about what it is for.
The four sources of gold are all slow. The four categories of purchase are all useful. The economy is balanced so that a regular user can afford the first capacity upgrade within a week of daily claims, and a major upgrade within a month.
That is the design. Slow enough to feel earned. Fast enough to feel reachable.
> XP is the measure. Gold is the means. The app keeps both, and asks you to spend the second on the room you need to grow.
